Road construction season 2011 is coming to a close

Road construction season 2011 is slowly coming to a close, therefore SC Group companies can be proud with completion of works and commissioning of several this year’s and previous years’ sites:

The total length of the site “H/w P62 Krāslava-Preiļi-Madona km 126.58-139.96 (Mētriena-Lazdona, bridges over Aiviekste and Kuja) Reconstruction Works” is 13.38 km.

The works execution contract was signed in October 2009. The road reconstruction works had to be started within 10 days after signing of the works execution contact. It was already freezing in that time and the weather conditions were not suitable for road construction. Therefore the works were carried out with low productivity until Christmas, and then there was a break for non-season period.

Spring came late in 2010, therefore the works were resumed in late April. We had planned to complete the works in 2010, however due to adverse weather conditions the works had to be postponed for 2011.

Along with construction works we had to solve issues related to the necessity to cut birch alley in tow road stages, and to the works in eventual ancient cemetery territory.

2 bridges had to be repaired in this project. These works were performed by subcontractors SIA Tilts. All other works were performed by SIA Talce employees.

The works in the site were completed in May 2011, and the site was commissioned on 11 October 2011.
In general we can say that this site required quite meticulous work, but the work execution time was much shorter than in other, simpler sites. However we gained experience to learn from.

The construction site “H/w P4 Rīga-Ērgļi 81.00-90.70 km (Taurupe–turn to Mazozoli) Reconstruction Works” was initiated on 1 September 2009. Aside from technical breaks, the works were executed for 294 calendar days. The works were completed on 27 July 2011, and the site was commissioned on 7 October. The total length of the constructed road was 9.7 km.

The beginning of the works in 2009 was not successful – late beginning of the works, humid autumn. The works had to be stopped quite often, however the stage had to be completed in order to enable traffic and perform maintenance in winter. Frequent precipitations that exceeded all standards both in 2009 and 2010 disturbed the work and increased costs of working processes.

Clayed soul which is hard or impossible to dig or mould had to be dried and another technical solution had to be found in order to continue work.

We worked in close cooperation with customer, construction engineer, construction custodians, colleagues and employees in the site. The number of employees and the members of the team changed, it depended on the work to be done, its amount and technological process; all units of SC Group were involved. We want to thank everyone for cooperation during implementation of this project!

6.2 km long project ”Reconstruction of h/w P124 Ventspils-Kolka in Sīkrags-Mazirbe section (km 50.10-56.30)” was funded by the EU through ERAF programme. The aim of the project was to lay asphalt gravel surfacing of the road. The works initiated on 4 April 2011 were well-known to SC Group, and they were performed without any surprises, except for the fact that the site was located in the territory of Slītere National Park, therefore there were some limitations.

Initially it was forbidden to seed roadside grass in order to avoid foreign cultures in the park territory, afterwards it was confirmed that this grass was already growing in the park, therefore it was allowed to be seeded. We had planned to leave slopes untouched in order to keep the natural environment of the park undisturbed as much as possible. However after having lifted the road coating, we had to pour black soil on the slopes which became wider.

The works in the site were completed on 7 October 2011.

The traffic is not busy on this road, and it was built mostly to promote Latvian tourism. In general this project was not very complicated, and we managed to complete works quite fast – hopefully we will have many similar projects in the future!

The works in the site “H/w P57 Malta-Sloboda 10.81-21.08 km (section Puša-border of Krāslava region) Reconstruction works” were initiated on 1 September 2009, and the work completion act was signed on 11 August 2011. The length of the built road stage is 10.27 km.

The highway construction works were carried out with the participation of a subcontractor from Rēzekne - SIA Ceļi un tilti. Many issues were caused by shortcomings of the technical project, non-conformity of materials to road specifications requirements and technical condition of asphalt concrete laying machines.

Despite various issues in the site, employees performed their work very thoroughly. The representatives of construction machine structural units took an active part in elimination of technical defects. The employees in charge of construction material delivery helped to supply the materials of the relevant quality.

From August to October 2011 we started and completed the works in several small sites: h/w P107 Skrunda–Ezere and V1152 Bērzi–Brocēni station, improvement works in the former Vārme airfield in the territory of ZS Ezergaļi, asphalt laying in pits after reconstruction of water handling and sewerage systems in Nīgrande, reconstruction of access ramp to Dzirnavu Street in Saldus, reconstruction of Skolas Street in Ēdole.
